Summer Reading - 2011

There are many people in the world that should pass along their knowledge, wisdom and experiences to the next generation. Entrepreneurs and leaders are not excluded from that list. As a matter of fact they should be some of the first ones to start the story. Some have decided to pick up a pen, sit at a typewriter, or dictate into a recorder. Here is just part of my summer reading list.  Each has its own story to tell. But all are very well worth a read.

MOVE

3 guys, 44 days, 11 countries, 18 flights, 38 thousand miles, an exploding volcano, 2 cameras and almost a terabyte of footage... all to turn 3 ambitious linear concepts based on movement, learning and food ....into 3 beautiful and hopefully compelling short films.....

= a trip of a lifetime.

‪City Lights From International Space Station (2002-2008)‬‏

Some really interesting images from outer space showing our world from above. When flying a red eye across the US at about 30,000ft everything looks tiny but getting a chance to see a city from the space station is something only a hand full of people can say they have done. I guess this is the next best thing.

Rapha Continental – The Movie on Vimeo

The documented travels cross country via a bike. Being an avid rider myself this is something that I'd love to aspire to, but definatly need to work on those hill climbs. a 20% + grade in some places is just sick! Adding these stages to my list.

Moving On Up

Airplane-seat

Over the past few months I have racked up a few thousand air miles jet setting around the US via Delta, visiting friends and family. Logging hours in those uncomfortable economy seats, but here are a few tips and tricks to get you through your next flight a little bit more comfortably

Seating can depend on when you book your flight, I have found that the best time is about 4-6 weeks prior to your travel date (holidays are an exception).

I usually book my travel plans directly from the airline, Delta in this case, but I also frequently use United/ContinentalKayak or Expedia. After purchasing your tickets most sites now offer you a chance to select your seating arrangements for all flights. On my most recent trip to Nashville this wasn't the case. Turns out that they were going to release the seating assignments based on when you check-in, so you know what that means. Check-in early, usually 24 hours before your flight and get a better seat.

If you do end up getting a seat that you don't want there still are a few options that you can look in to. Most airlines release seats that were held for their premium members or seats that cost more like exit row seats 2 hours before your flight. You can always try checking with the staff at the gate or try some new options like Delta's new twitter handle @DeltaAssist. They have been an invaluable asset to me when traveling. Delays, travel updates, mechanical issues, lost luggage and a whole host of other issues have been handled almost instantly.

If you have any suggestions on how to avoid the middle seat, please share them. Next post will be about, what to do if you are stuck in the middle seat.
